KHOST CITY (Pajhwok): A number of civil societyinfo-icon activists on Monday demanded a branch of the Afghanistaninfo-icon Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) office in southeastern Khost province.

Addressing a well-attended press conference, Ilyas Wahdat, a civil society activist, said Khost was a populated province which was inaccessible from Gardez, capital of Paktia province.  “

The AIHRC could not easily access Khost province from Gardez and the province was in dire need of an AIHRC branch office to resolve pressing problems of the residents.

Kamili Akbari, another civil society activist, said the AIHRC office should be established because the province had been experiencing a surge in cases of violence against womeninfo-icon.

AIHRC spokesman Rafiullah Baidar told Pajhwok Afghan News owing to surge in human rights violation cases, the AIHRC had eight zonal offices in six provinces. He informed that civil society activists had earlier requested AIHRC office in Khost.

He held out assurances that an AIHRC would open a branch office in Khost sooner than later.
