6 policemen, 4 civilians dead in Helmand gun battle

LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Two militants stormed the governor office in southern Helmand province on Wednesday, forcing their way inside the facility but they were engaged by the police and the ensuing battle left six policemen, four civilians and an insurgent dead, an eye witness and an official said.

Two rebels were shot dead and six policemen were also killed while three civilians wounded in the firefight, sources in the hospital told Pajhwok Afghan News.

A security official said Haji Gulab, chief of community police, was among the dead. Talibaninfo-icon took shelter inside a mosqueinfo-icon and firing on security forces.

Niazuddin Kaliwal, an eye witness, told Pajhwok Afghan News Taliban fighters tried to enter the governor office in Lashkargah. A policeman and two civilians were wounded during the firefight, which was still underway.

Col. Pacha Gul Bakhtiar, an official of the National Directorate of Security (NDSinfo-icon), said the firefight lasted four hours, which left six policemen dead and five others wounded. He did not say a word about civilians’ casualties.

Qari Yousaf Ahmedi, Taliban spokesperson, claimed killing ten policemen including Haji Gulab Ayubi in the attack.
