FIROZKOH (Pajhwok): Heavy fighting was underaway after a large number of Talibaninfo-icon militants stormed the headquarters of Chaharsada district of western Ghorinfo-icon province, a public representative said on Thursday.

More than 100 militants mounted attack on the district headquarters, with heavy fighting ongoing between the rebels and security forces, Fazal Haq Ihsan, a member of the provincial council, said.

He said the Taliban had been attacking security forces for the last four days to secure control of the district. He warned the district would fall to the rebels if security reinforcements did not arrive.

Ihsan said direct fight was ongoing in the main bazaar of the district and a stand-off was in progress between police and militants about 20 kilometres from the district centre.

The provincial council member, who is a resident of Chaharsada district, warned the government of dangerous consequences if security forces were not immediately provided air support and reinforcements.

Meanwhile, the governor’s spokesman, Abdul Hai Khatibi, said the provincial authorities had asked the central government to send additional troops to the district.
