President stresses transparency in awarding contracts

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has directed officials of the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum to ensure greater transparency in the bidding process and awarding of contracts of excavation of natural resources, a statement from the Presidential Palace said on Sunday.

The president issued the directives during a meeting of the National Procurement Committee (NPC) which was held Saturday night, the statement said.

Officials of Defence, educationinfo-icon, interior, energy and water ministries were present in the occasion. The president ordered the Ministry of Mines to release undisclosed contracts and present offer them for open bidding process.

The representative of each ministry had presented their view point during the meeting against the objections of NPC members.

Ghani again urged the ministries concerned to ensure transparency and avoid any gambling in the procurement contracts. The president said every ministry offer the contracts openly and avoid secret deals.

The president lamented over the influence of powerful individuals on the state treasury and asked officials to stop illegal excavation of mines.
