May 20, 2015 - 22:51

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Issuing the statistical yearbook for 2014, the Central Statistics Organisation (CSO) on Wednesday said Afghanistaninfo-icon’s populations had been estimated at 28.1 million people.

The yearbook shows Afghanistan’s economic growth, industrial production and imports have declined, but wheat yield and exports increased.

The issue shows the number of AIDS patients in Afghanistan has increased by an alarming 7.5 percent compared to figures in 2013.

SCO chief Sher Mohammad Jami said the yearbook had been prepared in two months and 99 percent matched the real figures.

He said all figures in the issue had been compiled in cooperation with ministries, independent government organisations and the private sector.

The statistical yearbook estimates womeninfo-icon’s population in Afghanistan at 13.7 million and men’s at 14.4 million. The population of Kuchiinfo-icon tribesmen is 1.5 million.

Of the populations, 12.2 million people are aged below 15 years and the rest above that age.

The yearbook shows the number of students in Afghanistan has increased by 11.3 percent in 2014 compared to 2013.

Last year, 91 new healthinfo-icon centres were opened, taking the number of such facilities to 2197 across Afghanistan --- 4.3 percent up against 2013.

But these centres could not meet the needs of patients as only five beds and three doctors are available for every 10,000 patients.

The yearbook shows Afghanistan gross domestic product was worth $21 billion in 2014, registering a 0.22 percent decline against 2013 GDP.

Last year, 5.4 million tonnes of wheat was produced, showing a 3.9 percent increase due to heavy rains.

The year saw 167444 hectors of additional land was used for growing wheat, rice and other food crops when compared with 2013.

The worth of government and private industrial products was 7315 million afghanis in 2014 against 3058.3 million in 2013, showing a 29.5 percent decline.

Imports accounted for $7.7 billion and exports $571 million in 2014 against $8.7 billion and $515 million respectively in 2013.
