Afghans can better defend country against threats: Senators

Afghans can better defend country against threats: Senators

May 26, 2015 - 17:10

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Some members of Meshrano Jirgainfo-icon or upper house of parliament on Tuesday criticized US president’s recent remarks, insisting Afghanistaninfo-icon has not been a dangerous place and Afghans could defend their country against threats.

In a Memorial Day speech honouring American soldiers who had lost their lives, Barack Obama said Afghanistan was still a dangerous place and Americans presence in the country would be confined to its embassy.

Nesar Haris, member of Meshrano Jirga, criticized Obama’s remarks saying: “Afghanistan has not been a dangerous place and it won’t be. Afghans have the courage to defend their country.”

“Who has destroyed this country?  Since the foreign troops have come to Afghanistan, they have not succeeded in reaching their aim of defeating insurgents and al-Qaeda. American leaders should refrain from such irresponsible comments regarding Afghanistan,” he remarked.

“It was because of America that Talibaninfo-icon reached to the helm of power. Afghanistan turned into safe haven for terrorists and drugs’ producers,” Haris alleged.

Mohammad Alam Izadyar, first deputy of Meshrano Jirga reacting to Obama’s remarks, said: “We believe that they have made Afghanistan a dangerous place and have no honesty in bringing peace and stability.”

“Yesterday they created Taliban, today they create Daesh. Tomorrow they will create another group to ensure their presence in Afghanistan,” he remarked.

If international community was honest in its anti-terror fight they should ensure peace in Afghanistan, he noted.
