AIBAK (Pajhwok): Flash floods swept through several districts of northern Samangan province, washing away dozens of homes, crops and domestic animals, officials said on Tuesday.

The floods emerged on Monday afternoon in Dara Sauf Payan, Dara Sauf Bala, Khuram was Sarbagh and Rui Duab districts.

A shepherd drowned in floodwaters in Lalkhel village was found dead in Kushanda district of neighbouring Balkh province, the Dara Sauf Payan district chief told Pajwhok Afghan News.

Fakhruddin Mubarez said teams had been sent to the affected areas to assess the damage. He said a number of household animals had perished in the disaster.

Nine houses were destroyed by the floods in Bani Mang village of the Dara Sauf Bala district, said Fazluddin, the town’s administrative head.

The Khuram wa Sarbagh district chief, Abdullah Mujahid, said 10 houses were lost to the flooding that damaged crops as well.

Samangan Natural Disaster Management Authority chief Rajab Ali Yousafi confirmed the losses and said the floods had also played havoc in the Rui Soab district. He said a delegation had been sent to the affected areas for investigation into the damage caused by the floods.

The floods emerge a month after 44 homes and agricultural fields were destroyed by flash floods in the provincial capital, Aibak, and Khuram wa Sarbagh district. The affected families had been assisted with food and non-food items.
