Abdullah condemns attack on Pajhwok bureau

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abdullah Abdullah on Thursday strongly condemned a bomb blast that tore through Pajhwok Afghan News bureau office in the capital of eastern Nangarhar province.

The magnetic bomb attached to the Pajhwok office’s entrance gate went off in Jalalabad city on Wednesday night, destroying office equipment. Pajhwok reporters were not present in the office at the time of the explosion.

Local officials said four guests at the nearby Voice of America office were injured in the blast.

“I strongly condemn the attack on Pajhwok Afghan News which is a developed media outlet on national level and the Voice of America offices. This was an attack on the freedom of expression,” Abdullah said in a statement.

The CEO said the unity government was committed to defending the freedom of expression and providing safe working environmentinfo-icon to journalists.

He directed security officials in Jalalabad to thoroughly investigate the incident, saying nobody would be allowed to create problems in the way of freedom of expression, journalists and the media.

Aurang Samim, Nangarhar information and culture director, who visited the Pajhwok office on Thursday morning, also condemned the attack.

He said Pajhwok as an independent outlet had always reflected the truth and people’s problems. He promised to work together with security forces in ensuring the safety of media organisations.

A statement from the governor’s office condemned the attack, saying: “We call this a cowardly act and an attack on the freedom of press. It has no justification.”

Security officials have been tasked with thoroughly investigating the blast and arresting the perpetrators to prevent such incidents in future.

A number of journalists and civil societyinfo-icon activists visited the Pajhwok bureau office in Jalalabad and condemned the incident.

Sabrina Hamidi, Independent Human Rights Commission head in Nangarhar, condemned the attack and urged officials to ensure that journalists were protected.
