KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani has asked the Ministry of Interior to prepare its procurement reforms programme and identify individuals involved in illegal activities in the previous procurement process.

The president said this while presiding over a meeting of the National Procurement Committee at the Presidential Palace on Sunday.

A statement from the president’s spokesman office said the meeting evaluated contracts of the ministries of mines and petroleum, public works, rural development, defence, interior, educationinfo-icon, Kabul municipality,

At the meeting, the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum was directed to pay special attention to healthinfo-icon condition of miners and take measures in this regard.

The meeting also approved a bypass road for western Herat province to reduce by 16 hours unnecessary journey for heavy vehicles and mitigate traffic problems in Herat City, the provincial capital.

Headed by second-vice president, the committee tasked with investigating contracts of the Interior Ministry presented its report to the meeting.

The meeting decided that a plan giving a six-month respite in the emergency contracts should be prepared and a bidding process reopened.

The Interior Ministry representatives said 72 experts had been sent to provincial departments related to the ministry for reforms in the procurement process.

Commenting on the Interior Ministry’s contracts, the president said the ministry needed to prepare its procurement reforms plan.

He said the procurement process be investigated openly and officials who had been involved in illegal activities in the previous process be identified.

The meeting was also presented its report by a delegation of the Education Ministry. The report said the ministry’s four procurement units had serious problems, which if not resolved, would lead to suspension of the procurements’ confirmation.

The meeting also approved some Defence Ministry’s contracts, saving nearly $2.8 million and another 22 out of 25 contracts worth two billion afghanis.

The defence and interior ministries were directed to improve the quality of food and calories given to security forces through preparing a plan at the earliest and presenting it to the Cabinet.
