Ghani arrives in Russia to attend SCO meeting

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): On the head of a high-level delegation, President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani on Thursday arrived in Russia to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the BRICS summits.

A statement from the Presidential Palace said that the president during his two-day visit would participate in the SCO and BRICS summits.

He would hold deliberations to improve regional cooperation particularly economy, peace and stability in Afghanistaninfo-icon and counter challenges facing the region.

The statement said that Ghani was accompanied by Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani, National Security Advisor (NSA) Mohammad Hanif Atmar, and president’s advisor in central Asia affairs Shakir Kargar.

The SCO was established jointly by China, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan in 2001; Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistaninfo-icon, India and Mongolia are given observer status in the organization.

The BRICS is a new association of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
