AIBAK (Pajhwok): Unidentified gunmen have shot dead Islamic scholar in the Suf Payan district of northern Samangan province on Monday, an official says.

A resident of the area who wished not to be named told Pajhwok Afghan News that Maulviinfo-icon Mohammad Israil, teacher at a local Madrassainfo-icon, was gunned down by militants inside a mosqueinfo-icon.

The attackers managed to escape after committing the crime.

Five years ago, the slain religious leader was Talibaninfo-icon’s designated district chief but later he parted ways with insurgents.

Mohammad Sidiq Azizi, the governor’s spokesman, alleged Taliban killed slain person because he did not support militants’ group anymore.

However, Taliban have not yet commented on the incident.

Maulvi Safiullah Siraji, director hajjinfo-icon and religious affairs, condemned the killing of the Islamic scholar and said killing a Muslim in the holy month of Ramadaninfo-icon is an inhuman act.
