KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): A three days polio eradication campaign covering nine million children under five years of age got underway across Afghanistaninfo-icon on Sunday.

Public Healthinfo-icon Minister Firuzuddin Firoz, who formally inaugurates the first round of polio vaccination campaign, said teams would be visiting every house to administer polio drops to children.

Besides the polio vaccination, as many as two million children would be provided with Vitamin-A drops, he remarked.

He urged families to make sure their children received the vaccine. "Polio immunization is essential to protect children from crippling disease."

He asked citizens, health workers and partners to support the drive aimed at eradicating the disease from Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, around 27,000 children in the eastern part of the country were deprived of polio drops due to insecurity and rebels’ presence.

In addition, the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) on Sunday launched a drive against low quality food items in the eight municipality district.

The campaign would last for at least one month in which expired and low quality food items would be taken into custody.
