HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): At least 120 more students of three different schools in two districts of western Herat province were found poisoned on Tuesday, an official said.

Mohammad Rafiq Sherzai, the zonal hospital spokesman, confirmed to Pajhwok Afghan News receiving 70 poisoned students from the Khatam-ul-Anbya School in Injil district and Jaghtan School in Guzra district at 8:00am.

According to Sherzai, students from 6th to 12th class were poisoned due to a gas smell. He said the students complained of headaches and stomach problems after being poisoned.

Districts clinic head Fariba Siddiqui said around 48 poisoned students had been received. She added 18 were referred from Guzra district and 30 others from Injil.

Educationinfo-icon Director Abdul Razzaq Ahmadi told Pajhwok Afghan News so far the cause of the poisoning could not be ascertained. Security and intelligence officials have been tasked to trace the perpetrators behind.

Naheed, one of the affected students who had just recovered, said she felt a bad smell before falling unconscious at her school.
