FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): The Worldinfo-icon Food Program (WFP) has suspended operation in northeastern Badakhshan province after insurgents torched the agency’s vehicles, an official said on Thursday.

The militants set on fire five trucks of the UN food agency in Yaftal district on September 12. The trucks, returning after food delivery to Yawan district, were burnt in Sarsufa locality.

Ahmad Naveed Frotan, the governor’s spokesman, said provincial council members and local elders had talked to WFP official to resume operations. They assured the officials such incidents would not recur.

He said WFP officials had not yet responded to their request. However, he believed the UN agency would respond today or tomorrow.
