Badakhshan’s Warduj district also overrun by Taliban

Badakhshan’s Warduj district also overrun by Taliban

Oct 02, 2015 - 10:24

FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): Resurgent Talibaninfo-icon fighters have captured the Warduj district of northeastern Badakhshan province, an official acknowledged on Friday.

Ahmad Naveed Frotan, the acting governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the militants gained control of the restive district after launching a series of attacks on police posts.

The coordinated assaults, beginning at 4pm, lasted until 7pm on Thursday, according to the spokesman, who said Afghan soldiers and police had retreated to Bahark district.

Frotan characterised the retreat as a tactical move to prevent civilian casualties. He claimed up to 20 Taliban, including a foreign militant, had been killed in clashes with the security forces.

He added the fighters’ bodies were still lying at the site of the clashes, which caused the security personnel no casualties.

Also late on Thursday, the spokesman said, the Taliban attacked security checkpoints in Baharak district. Seven militants and a member of the Afghan Local Police were killed in the ensuing firefights.

The fighting continued until 5am in Baharak. Governor Shah Waliullah Adeeb, police chief Gen. Baba Jan and the intelligence director are currently in the district to keep it from falling to the Taliban.

On the other hand, the Taliban claimed overrunning 23 security posts and killing at least 25 personnel guarding them.
