MAIMANA (Pajhwok): Talibaninfo-icon fighters captured more parts of Garziwan and Pashtunkot districts of northern Faryab province on Thursday when security personnel said they had tactically vacated the areas.

The insurgents seized Qazaq, Faraish, Shash Qara, Ghal Namak, Kikawas and Dara-i-Jawz localities of Garziwan district. They also overran Gawki, Tagab Shan and Jar Qala areas, local officials said.

The security forces retreated during clashes, in which 11 fighters and six security personnel were killed and nine militants and 13 soldiers wounded, Deputy GovernorAbdul Sattar Barezsaid.

At least 23 insurgents have been killed and dozens, including five policemen, wounded during ongoing fighting in the Khwaja Musa area of Pashtunkot, he said.

However, Taliban spokesmanQari Yousuf Ahmadisaid they had captured four checkpoints so far besides seizing a police pick-up and ammunition.

An uprising commander, Naqibullah Tofar, said they had called for assistance but the government did not pay any attention to the area, where Taliban set afire civilian houses.

Urgent support was needed to the security personnel in the district centre, which might fall to the Taliban, the commander warned.

Despite suffering casualties in Garziwan and Pashtunkot, Taliban might storm Maimana, the capital of Faryab, if the government did not reinforce the security personnel, warned provincial council head Syed Abdul Baqi.

Four nights back, the insurgents sneaked into some parts of Maimana but they encountered strong resistance at the hands of security officials and uprising forces.
