Oct 09, 2015 - 16:04

MAIMANA (Pajhwok): A commander was among half a dozen Talibaninfo-icon fighters killed during an overnight clash with Afghan military forces in Pashtunkot district of northern Faryab province, an official said on Friday.

Maj. Reza Rezai, a spokesman for the Afghan National Army’s 209th Shaheen Military Corps, told Pajhwok Afghan News the clash broke out in Badqaq locality on Thursday night.

The gun battle took place after dozens of Taliban militants staged attacks on security posts from Ghormach district. Following the attack, he said, army soldiers rushed to the area and along with border police repelled the insurgents from the area.

Rezai said six Taliban fighters, including a commander, were killed in the incident. The commander’s identity was not yet known.

A Taliban source in Faryab said the group had overrun 14 security posts in Khwaja Musa and Badqaq localities and killed four security personnel.

According to local officials, reinforcements from the army, special commandos and other special forces under Vice-President Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum command are expected to arrive in the province for operations.
