BAMYAN CITY (Pajhwok): Japan has donated snow-clearing machines worth nearly $1.4 million to central Bamyan province to help keep road open in winter, officials said on Sunday.

The eight machines, including two excavators, two graders, two loaders and as many dump trucks, were handed on Sunday to the provincial Public Works Department, the department director, Eng. Mohammad Anwari, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Before, he said, they would hire services of private companies against 20 million afghanis each year for snow-clearing operations, but now the expenses would be reduced by a half.

Now his department would clear of snow half of the more than 300 kilometres of roads in the province this winter.

A resident of Bamyan City, happy over the assistance, asked the officials concerned to properly use the machines to facilitate people in remote villages.

According to Bamyan governor, the machines donated by Japan valued at $1.4 million.
