Needed measures taken for Ashura, says minister

Needed measures taken for Ashura, says minister

Oct 20, 2015 - 17:02

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Hajjinfo-icon and Religious Affairs Minister Faiz Mohammad Osmani on Tuesday said Ashurainfo-icon mourners should donate their blood to people in need instead of shedding their blood on roads.

Flanked by Shia and Sunni scholars, Osmani told a press conference in Kabul that said his ministry had taken all needed measures to facilitate mourning processions on the Day of Ashura.

The day falls on the 10th of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is marked by Muslims as a whole, but for Shia Muslims it is a major religious commemoration of the martyrdom at Karbala of Imaminfo-icon Hussein, a grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). This year, the 10th of Muharram is October 24, next Saturday.

The Hajj and Religious Affairs Minister said said Hussein belonged to all sects of Muslims.

“All Muslims should respect the emotions of others and do not indulge in any action that can be misused by our enemies. We should celebrate this day in brotherhood and should extend support to security forces for the protection of mourners,” Osmani said.

He urged religious scholars to advise their followers that the Day of Ashura was mourning on the one hand, but a great culture of Muslims on the other.

“The mourners should not violate Islamic rules, it would be better if they donate blood to needed people instead of shedding it on roads,” he added.

Osmani also asked Talibaninfo-icon militants to shun violence and arrive at the negotiating table with the Afghan government for peace talks.

The scholars, who attended the press conference, urged participants of Ashura processions to cooperate with security forces in maintaining their security.

They asked mourners not to disturb others or create disruption on roads and exhibit their good behaviour during the Ashura Day.
