Taliban’s deputy governor for Faryab killed

MAIMANA (Pajhwok): Talibaninfo-icon’s newly-appointed deputy governor for Faryab was among five others killed during fierce clashes with security forces in the northern province where electricity supply has been suspended.

Maj. Mohammad Reza Rezai, the spokesman for the 209th Shaheen Military Corps in Faryab, said Mullahinfo-icon Abdul Sammad and his four fighters were killed in Charshanbi locality of Qaisar district on Wednesday.

Samad was named as Taliban’s shadow deputy governor for Faryab after his predecessor Qari Salahuddin was detained by security forces a month back.

The power suspension due to clashes has sent prices of gas and oil soaring in Faryab. An employee of the power utility, Breshana Shirkat, said they would restore the power supply to Faryab untill evening if there were no clashes.

The Taliban also attacked a security forces convoy on its way from Jawzjan province to Faryab. A truck belonging to the security forces was torched in the incident.

However, Rezai said the convoy started proceeding after two hours of fighting that left many Taliban militants killed and wounded.
