UN agencies ready to support relief operations: Ban

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The UN secretary-general’s has voiced his profound shock over the loss of human life and destruction caused by Monday’s earthquake.

“My thoughts are with the people of Afghanistaninfo-icon and Pakistaninfo-icon in the aftermath of the powerful earthquake that struck Afghanistan,” Ban Ki-moon said.

Reports are still coming in but it is clear that there has been loss of life and serious damage to infrastructure in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

He sent his “deepest condolences” to the people and governments of Pakistan and Afghanistan and to everyone affected.

In a statement from his office, the secretary-general particularly sympathised with those who have lost family members and friends.” He wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

“United Nations agencies are mobilising and stand ready to support government-led relief operations in both countries, if requested,” he concluded.
