8 dead in security incidents; 5 Pakistanis detained

JALALABAD/PUL-I-KHUMRI (Pajhwok): A traffic policeofficial and seven militants have been killed in separate incidents in northern Laghman and eastern Nangarhar provinces, authorities said on Thursday.

Baghlan Traffic Department head Col. Abdur Razzaq told Pajhwok Afghan News a group of militants opened fire on a traffic police vehicle in the Chesham Sherbagh area of Pul-i-Khumri, the provincial capital.

He said that on traffic policeman was killed, another wounded and a third taken hostage by militants as a result of the attack on Wednesday evening. Motive behind the assault was yet to be known, Razzaq added.

However, the Talibaninfo-icon militants killing two policemen in a bomb blast in the Bagh Shamal area of Pul-I-Khumri.They said three more policemen were killed in a roadside bombing in Doshi district.

But the district’s administrative chief, Shamsuddin Sarhadi, rejected the Taliban claims and said no bomb attack had occurred in the town.

According to another report, seven militants were killed and 11 others wounded during an operation in the Achin district of Nangarhar. Police spokesman Hazrat Hussain Mashriqiwal confirmed said that Afghan forces and civilians suffered no losses.

Mehrabuddin, a resident of Achin, said the security forces’ operation had been ongoing over the past few days.He said both Afghan forces and militants had suffered casualties, but he had no exact figures.

Mashriqiwal said six rebels, including five Pakistanis, had been arrested during a separate operation in the Saicho area of Ghanikhel district. Five Kalashnikovs, a walkie-talkie, 16 magazines and ammunition were seized.
