President holds fruitful meetings with Indian, Iranian FMs

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): President Ashraf  Ghani has returned Islamabad after attending the Heart of Asia- Istanbul Process conference in Pakistaninfo-icon, his office said on Thursday.

The president flew back home Wednesday night following a series of important meetings with key representatives of various countries on the sideline of conference.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Javed  Zareef and the president discussed security, trade and other issues of mutual interest.

The Chabahar port, a railway track, the fight against Islamic State were among the subjects discussed, a statement from Presidential Palace said.

During a separate meeting with Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj, the president lauded New Delhi’s assistance to Afghan security forces.

Ghani also hailed Indian assistance for the development of Afghanistaninfo-icon’s mining sector, including the processing of marble stones and its access to European markets.

The president appreciated Swaraj’s comprehensive address to the conference on Afghanistan and the region at large. She assured Ghani of continued Indian aid to Afghanistan in mining and other sectors.

She said: “Indian would stand by the Afghan government and Afghanistan being a sovereign country reserves every right to forge relations with other nations.

According to Swaraj, Afghan goods and services would have a good market in Indian if existing transit trade issues were resolved, the statement concluded.
