CHARIKARinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): The Salang Passinfo-icon -- linking the capital Kabulinfo-icon with northern Afghanistaninfo-icon --was blocked for traffic on Wednesdayafter a heavy snowstorm on the key highway, an official said.

The busy highway has been closed since morning due to a heavy windstorm that considerably reduced visibility, the Salang maintenance commander, Gen. MohammadRajab, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said hundreds of passenger vehicles had been stranded in the Mal Khan area of Baghlan-i-Markazi district and the Tajikan locality of Jabalus Siraj to avoid possible mishaps.

Parwan Traffic Director Mehrab said they would not let the vehicles pass through the tunnel until the threat of the windstorms and snowstorms subsided.

In Feb. 2010, 170 people died and 125 others were injured as a result of heavy snowstorms and avalanches that hit the Russian-built tunnel.
