Above 26,000 people languishing in Afghan jails

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The International Center for Prison Studies (ICPS) has found that 74 persons in each 100,000 people are imprisoned in Afghanistaninfo-icon.

The ICPS statistics show the number of prisoners in Afghanistan has increased from 5,262 inmates in 2004 to 26,519 in 2014.

Estimating Afghanistan’s population at 35.6 million individuals, the organization says 2.7 percent or 718 of total prisoners are womeninfo-icon and 31 percent are temporary detainees.

Based on the report, 187 detention centers and 30 juvenile detention facilities have been established until 2013 in Afghanistan.

Afghan officials have not yet commented about the number of prisoners and detention centers in the country.
