Woman who tried to sell her daughter receives assistance

MAIMANA (Pajhwok): First Vice President Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum and an Afghan expatriate have provided cash assistance to a poor family that offered children for sale.

Pajhwok Afghan News broke the story of the impoverished household in northwestern Faryab province trying to sell the girl to meet its basic economic needs.

Pajhwok also released a video clip of the woman who brought her daughters to the local market for sale. The family belongs to the Oncha Arlat locality of Maimana, the provincial capital.

In fact, the woman brought her four children to the market, but a shopkeeper stopped her from selling them and assisted her with some cash.

Following the release of the harrowing story, some Afghans in foreign countries and VP Dostum provided the family with cash assistance of 100,000 afghanis.

Dostum provided 50,000 afghanis, eight bags of rice, three cans of oil and other items to the family though Pajhwok’s reporter. Some civil societyinfo-icon activist were also present on the occasion.

Wahid Nekyar, an Afghan living in Canada, also provided $200 via Pajhwok to the family. The aid recipient thanked Pajhwok for highlighting her plight in a responsible manner.

Javed Kiwan, a civil society activist, said media had played a key role in highlighting the case. “It was due to media that the poor family received cash and came out of a critical situation.”
