3 Afghan women, child drown as migrant boat sinks in Turkey

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Four Afghan nationals drowned off the Turkish coast after a migrant boat sank in the Aegean Sea on Monday, media reports said.

The boat sank some 200 metres from the coast of Ayvacik, a resort town used by thousands of migrants to make their way to the Greek island of Lesbos.

Anadolu Agency reported the Turkish coast guards rescued eight other migrants, including a baby, while five others were able to swim to safety.

According the Turkish Weekly, three womeninfo-icon and a child lost their lives after the vessel carrying the Afghan asylum seekers sank off Canakkale province.

More than a million refugees arrived in Europe by sea in 2015, according to the UN. Over 80 percent of the arrivals entered via Greece.

The International Organization for Migrationinfo-icon says 3,771 asylum seekers died or went missing on their way to Europe in 2015.
