KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): A Canadian tourist, who was kidnapped in southern Afghanistaninfo-icon five years ago by the Talibaninfo-icon, has been released, authorities in Toronto says.

Colin Rutherford was reported missing in February 2011 while visiting the Ghazni province. He was freed with Qatar’s help, the Canadian foreign minister said on Monday.

Stephane Dion added: “Canada is very pleased that efforts undertaken to secure the release of Rutherford have been successful.”

In a statement, the minister said he looked forward to Rutherford being able to return to Canada and reunite with his family.

Rutherford had said in a video released by the Taliban in May 2011 that he visited Afghanistan to see historical sites, old buildings and shrines.
