Afghan, Pakistani spymasters set to hold cooperation talks

Afghan, Pakistani spymasters set to hold cooperation talks

Jan 31, 2016 - 14:01

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): In a rare move, Afghanistaninfo-icon and Pakistaninfo-icon will hold talks on intelligence cooperation next week, a media report said on Sunday.

National Directorate of Security (NDSinfo-icon) head Masoud Andarabi and Inter Services Intelligence (ISIinfo-icon) chief Lt Gen Rizwan Akhtar will meet in Islamabad on February 4.

Aimed at overcoming the bilateral trust deficit, the intelligence cooperation talks are being facilitated by the US, according to Dawn, which said China would attend the meeting as an observer.

Intelligence officials from the US and China are also scheduled to arrive Islamabad, which is going to host the third meeting of the Quadrilateral Coordination Group on Feb 6.

The intelligence dialogue, which is not linked to the reconciliation effort, is expected to help improving the prospects of that initiative.

However, a source close to the National Directorate of Security (NDS), denied the conducting of intelligence cooperation talks.

In May 2015, the two sides had signed an intelligence cooperation accord that failed due to strong political opposition from influential Afghan figures.
