Religious scholar gunned down in Jalalabad

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): A religious scholar was gunned down by unknown assailants in the capital of eastern Nangarhar province on Monday, an official said.

The gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire at Maulviinfo-icon Ahmad Shah in Angoor Bagh area of Jalalabad at about 2pm, the governor’s spokesman, Attaullah Khogyani, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

The cleric was on his way to his area mosqueinfo-icon from another mosque at the old customs department after attending a translation session of the holy Quraninfo-icon when came under attack, he said.

The victim had no government job, Khogyani said, adding an investigation into the murder had been opened.

A resident of Jalalabad, Abdullah, said he was walking when he saw motorcyclists opened fire at a pedestrian. It appeared later the man killed was a religious scholar, he said.

There has been no claim of responsibility for the assassination.
