4 tribal elders kidnapped in Azra; Taliban deny involvement

Feb 21, 2016 - 12:39

PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): Four tribal elders have been taken hostage by militants in the Azra district of central Logar province, official said on Sunday. The Talibaninfo-icon, however, rejected the claim as groundless.

The elders were snatched from their vehicle in the Spin Jumat area of Azra late on Friday, Hameedullah Hameed, the district chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Abdul Wakeel, the provincial council chairman who hails from Azra, confirmed the incident. “The elders were kidnapped by the insurgents on their way to the Aryub Zazai district of Paktia.”

On the other hand, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the fighters had not kidnapped anyone in the restive district, bordering Nangarhar province.

“Yesterday, pro-government militiamen captured some people, killing one of them and handing over the rest of captives to the authorities in Kabulinfo-icon,” he added.
