Spin Boldak customs manager among several detained

Spin Boldak customs manager among several detained

Feb 23, 2016 - 16:54

KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): Customs manager based in the Spin Boldak district of southern Kandahar province has been arrested along with some border policeman on the charge of embezzling government’s revenue, an official said on Tuesday.

The detained men have been accused of allowing trucks carrying commercial goods without paying taxes and thus pocketing millions of afghanis.

The governor’s spokesman, Samim Khpalwak, told Pajhwok Afghan News the officials had been detained based on evidence produced by an investigation team appointed by the governor’s house.

He did not provide the exact number of the detainees, but said they included the Spin Boldak customs manager. However, some sources put the number of those detained at 11.

These officials were depositing taxes collected from trucks to their personal bank accounts instead of the government’s kitty, Khpalwak said, adding that important figures were involved in the corruption, but he did not name them.

The detained individuals are currently under investigation and complete details about the matter would be shared with the media after the investigation had finished, he said.

New employees have been sent to Spin Boldak customs for keeping the department’s affairs running, Khpalwak said.

Kandahar police spokesman Zia Durrani said police had accompanied the governor’s house delegation to the Spin Boldak customs office.

He said some gunmen arrived in a car and tried to enter the customs office, but police stopped them. These armed individuals were possibly linked to an official who wanted to interfere in the investigation process.

Durrani did not provide more details about the issue but said information in this regard would be shared, pending an ongoing investigation.
