MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): The provincial government spokesman for northern Balkh province on Saturday said he could not deny corruption in local departments but level of the menace was low here compared to other provinces.

Munir Farhad, the spokesman for acting Governor Atta Mohammad Noor, told Pajhwok Afghan News government affairs in various sectors of Balkh province were effectively discharged this solar yearinfo-icon.

He said dozens of projects were initiated and executed in areas of educationinfo-icon, rural and urban development in the province this year --- more than the previous years.

Despite some security incidents in Mazar-i-Sharif, the provincial capital, this solar year, the security situation in Balkh remained commendable, Farhad said, calling as vicious the attack on the attorney’s office and the botched assault on the Indian consulate.

The group attack on the provincial attorney’s office left more than 60 people killed and wounded before all the four attackers were killed after several hours.

But the attack on the Indian consulate came to an end with the killing of all three attackers who failed to cause any casualties.

Munir Farhad said though the attacks had resulted from a security lapse, the response from Afghan security forces was praiseworthy.

He acknowledged insecurity in some districts had a negative impact on reconstructioninfo-icon projects.

Sometimes insurgent attacks take place in Chahar Bolak, Chamtal and Sholgar districts where residents are not satisfied with reconstruction efforts.

The gubernatorial spokesman did not rule out corruption in provincial departments but said it persisted on a low level compared to all other provinces.

He said they were making untiring efforts at preventing corruption in cooperation with people, saying corruption in provincial revenue departments could not be denied but they had repeatedly asked the media and provincial council members to produce credible evidence in this regard.
