KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): Two policemen died and a telecommunication tower was destroyed as a result of insurgent attack on checkpoint in the southern province of Kandahar, officials said on Monday.
The incident took place on Sunday evening when militants attacked a checkpoint in the SorkhBeg area of the Shah Walikot district, a security official said on condition of anonymity.
Two policemen were killed, a third was injured and a tower of Afghan Wireless Communication Company (AWCC) was destroyed in the assault, the source said.
However, the governor’s spokesman, Samim Khpalwak told Pajhwok Afghan News the attack occurred in the bordering area of neighboring Uruzgan province.
Meanwhile, another security source said five policemen were killed in the attack.
Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousuf Ahmadi asserted responsibility for the attack, saying they have killed eight policemen and captured the checkpoint in the Sorkh Beg area.
