Pakistan provides heavy weapons to Taliban: Gen. Raziq

KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): The provincial police chief of southern Kandahar province on Friday accused Pakistan fighters.

Earlier, Pakistan would only provide money and explosives to insurgents, but now they also offer heavy weapons to the Afghan rebels, the provincial police chief, Gen. Abdul Raziq addressed a press conference in Kandahar City.

Other financial sources of Taliban have also been increased after their meeting with Russian delegation, he said while warning regarding the increased Taliban attacks in spring season.

Police have taken security measures in many areas of the province and would also station new units of security forces in different areas, he said.

The target killings have been increased in winter season, but the numbers are less than past winters, he responded a query.

Regarding the insider attacks, he said there were five such incidents occurred in the past one year in the Maiwand, Shah Walikot and Khakrez districts of Kandahar province.

“After capturing areas in other provinces, militants would take hostage the family members of the policemen who would perform duties in Kandahar. The policemen would be then obliged to kill their comrades or hand over weapons to insurgents,” he said adding most of the policemen who have killed their fellow policemen, were from Helmand, Baghlan and Badghis provinces.

The security situation was not good in the past year as the government was kept busy in peace talks while insurgent attacks increased, he said.

“It is true that Pakistan made some of Taliban to commence peace talks, but it controlled others to continue war in Afghanistan, so the current peace talks are only waste of time,” he said.
