KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Islamic State (IS), also known as Daesh, has 10,000 supporters in Afghanistaninfo-icon, a number that may increase, a top Russia diplomat says.

“The IS activity has grown significantly in Afghanistan since summer 2014. The group’s numerical strength is estimated at 10,000,” Zamir Kabulov said.

A Russian news agency quoted him as saying: “The figure can continue growing, as the IS slogans and high financing are attractive to Afghan youth.”

Coalition forces in Afghanistan estimate 1,000 to 3,000 Daesh fighters are active in in eastern Afghanistan. Daesh has suffered a string of setbacks during operations in Nangarhar province.
