Mar 27, 2016 - 22:54

PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): A senior military official was killed on Sunday in a bomb blast in the Mohammad Agha district of central Logar province.

The 203 Thunder Military Corps fourth brigade’s garrison commander Col. Mohammada Jan was killed in Zaghun Khar area after he visited his ancestral home there in the evening.

The bomb had been skillfully attached to the home’s gate and was detonated as Jan was coming out of the building, the governor’s spokesman, Salim Saleh, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said the slain commander was spearheading an operation against militants in the area. The operation was launched in the morning and was still in progress, Saleh said.

No one else got hurt in the blast, the gubernatorial spokesman said, calling Col. Mohammada Jan as “a great commander,” who had been trying to strengthen security in the country.

A resident of Zarghun Khar area, Niazullah, told Pajhwok Afghan News that a large number of Afghan forces arrived in the area in the morning and there had been some clashes between security forces and militants.

He said due to the clashes, most residents stayed indoors. In the evening, the resident said, they came to know that a military commander had been killed and his two guards injured in a blast.

The Talibaninfo-icon have so far said nothing about the incident in Mohammad Agha, a town 35km south of Kabulinfo-icon. The Zarghun Khar area is heavy infested by Taliban militants.
