Af-Pak tension mother of all problems in region: Khalilzad

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The lingering tension between Islamabad and Kabul is the mother of all problems in the Af-Pak region, says a former American diplomat.

Zalmay Khalilzad, in an interview with the Voice of America, accused the United States of having failed to persuade Afghanistaninfo-icon and Pakistaninfo-icon to cooperate.

The ex-US ambassador to Afghanistan believed the estranged neighbours needed each other and they should cooperate on issues of common interest.

Khalilzad was quoted as saying: “This (blame game)is going on so many years later. And I think this is the mother, in my view, of the problems of Afghanistan.”

Talibansafe havens on Pakistani soil were the main reason why the United States could not achieve its goals in Afghanistan, Khalilzad believed.

He went on to claim: “I was the first (US) administration official at that level to say a sanctuary was being developed, but nobody believed me then. If you say that now, no one would challenge that.”
