Wolesi Jirga panel to review TUTAP project route

Wolesi Jirga panel to review TUTAP project route

May 04, 2016 - 16:38

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon on Wednesday appointed a delegation to review the route of the proposed Turkmenistan-Uzbekistan-Tajikistan-Afghanistaninfo-icon-Pakistaninfo-icon (TUTAP) electricity transfer project.

The lower house of the parliament said the route of the 500kv power project would be changed based on findings of the parliamentary commission.

The Ministry of Water and Energy (MoWE) has recommend that the project should be implemented through Salang Passinfo-icon crossing Baghlan province, but a number of people have stressed the project should pass through central Bamyan province.

However, Asadullah Saadati, a lawmaker from central Daikundi province, criticized the MoWE and said: “It is not important from where this project should pass because the electricity is coming to Afghanistan, but the energy minister has disrupted the master plan and has ignored a part of the country, we are against injustice, death to those who fuel differences in the country.”

Mulavi Abdul Rahman Rahmani, a lawmaker from northern Balkh province, said any issue creating differences should not be discussed anymore rather they should be resolved between politicians in a way that protected national interests.

MP Arif Rahmani from southern Ghazni province said: “Do not politicise TUTAP project, which should be implemented based on documents available with the MoWE.”

He said a professional team should be tasked with identifying advantages and disadvantages of both the project routes and then a final decision should be made.

Wolesi Jirga Speaker Abdu; Rauf Ibrahimi asked the house communications commission to contact the relevant organs to review information about the project and share the result with the house for a final decision.
