6 Afghans gunned down, 18 wounded by Iranian police

May 09, 2016 - 12:24

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Iranian police have shot dead six Afghan citizens and wounded 18 others, who were trying to enter the neighbouring country, a media report said on Monday.

Trend news agency reported police chased a truck carrying illegal Afghan refugees into Iran. In police firing at the vehicle, six people were killed and 18 others injured.

It said the shooting took place late on Sunday in the eastern Iranian city of Rafsanjan. Many of the refugees were aged between 20 and 30.

Ali Reza Parivar, police chief for the area, was quoted as saying that the truck had been spotted in a desert by security forces. When the driver refused to stop, the forces on patrol chased the vehicle.

The major shooting erupted when the driver ran into policemen, who had blocked the road ahead of him. Iran hosts over 1.5 million registered Afghan refugees, and as many illegal Afghans.
