PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): Work on constructing canals, a cost of 286 million afs project, was launched in central Logar province on Tuesday, officials said.
Minister of Rural Rehabilitation and Development Naseer Ahmad Durrani inaugurated the project in Pul-i-Alam, the provincial capital, and Mohammad Agha district.
He said the 16 canals would take one year to complete. “We will construct canals with financial support from the international community,” the minister added.
The project would pave the way for hiring thousands of people and its implementation would bring thousands of hectares of land under irrigation. Durrani asked provincial council members and residents to monitor work on the project.
Meanwhile, Governor Mohammad Halim Fidayee said the canals were 300 kilometres long. The project would pave the way for the hiring of 15,000 professional and 55,000 unskilled workers.
“The execution of such schemes is very useful in creating employment opportunities and resolve many people’s problems,” the governor remarked.
He said the project was being implemented in consultation with local councils and would irrigate 13 hectares of land. The 16 canals would benefit 332 villages.
Provincial council head Syed QaribullahSadaat said: “We are happy with the execution of the project. Over the past 14 years, our province has been discriminated against and no major projects were done during the period.”
