Symposium on women’s empowerment held in Kabul

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): More than 300 females attended a symposium on the empowerment and role of Afghan womeninfo-icon in societyinfo-icon at the Presidential Palace in Kabul.

Around 70 of the participants were from 34 provinces and the rest all from different national and international organisations, a statement from the Palace said on Thursday.

Following the Washington Symposium in 2013 and Oslo in 2014, the third event of the kind was jointly arranged by the Ministries of Foreign and Women's Affairs, Afghan Women's Network and Office of the First Lady.

Support by the United States and Norway, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted a reception on May 20. CEO Dr. Abdullah First Lady Rula Ghani, MPs, ministers, ambassadors and special representatives of the US, Norway, Europe and NATOinfo-icon attended the event.

A documentary on Afghan women "Yesterday and Today" was screened on the occasion. The conference commenced with remarks from Minister of Foreign Affairs Salahuddin Rabbani and a speech from President Ashraf Ghani on May 21.

Panel discussions were opened with welcome remarks from First Lady Rula Ghani and a speech from 2nd Vice President Sarwar Danish. The conference proceeded with discussions and speeches from different participants.

In this symposium the active role of women in society their achievements and challenges were discussed, with specific topics on Women in Islam, Judicial and Justice Issues, Healthinfo-icon, Educationinfo-icon, Economy, Peace and Security.
