Zakhilwal, Aziz meet on peace prospects after Mansour’s death

Zakhilwal, Aziz meet on peace prospects after Mansour’s death

May 30, 2016 - 12:52

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Senior diplomats from Pakistaninfo-icon and Afghanistaninfo-icon met on Monday on prospects of the peace process after the killing of the Talibaninfo-icon leader in last week’s US drone strike.

AfghanAmbassador Dr. Hazrat Omar Zakhilwal called on Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s Advisor on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz in Islamabad to discuss the moribund peace drive.

Issues of bilateral interest, including the Afghan peace campaign following the death of Mullahinfo-icon Akhtar Mansour in the Naushki district of Balochistan province, figured at the meeting, an official told Pajhwok Afghan News.

After Mansour’s death on May 21, Aziz blamed Washington for adding a new complexity to the Afghan conflict. “We believe that this action has undermined the Afghan peace process,” he told reporters.

On April 18, the Quadrilateral Coordination Group (QCG), involving Afghanistan, Pakistan, the US and China, had agreed that a political settlement was the most viable option and efforts must go on to bring the Taliban to the negotiating table.
