Election commission’s deputy secretary stands down

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The deputy secretary of the Independent Election Commission (IECinfo-icon) on Saturday resigned in protest against uncertainty surrounding Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon and district council polls.

Ahmad Javed Habibi is the second senior IEC official after Ziaul Haq Amarkhel to stand down as deputy secretary of the panel.

Amarkhel had resigned nearly two years back as the commission’s secretary and Habibi had since been holding the position as acting secretary.

Habib, in his resignation letter, said the main reason behind his decision was the uncertain fate of the election process and waste of energies and time. He would be no longer in the position with effect from June 20.

“I’m proud of having served in different positions at the IEC over the past nine years. I did my job in a critical situation and took over as acting secretary at a challenging time,” he remarked.

He explained he was ready to work in other positions and serve the country by using his management skills and experience.

Meanwhile, IEC spokesmanNoor Mohammad Noor confirmed Habibi had resigned last Wednesday. But he said his resignation had not been approved so far.
