ASADABAD (Pajhwok): At least 12 people, including five girls, have drowned in in separate incidents in eastern Kunar province, an official said on Sunday.

Police chief Brig. Gen. Abdul Habib Syedkhel told Pajhwok Afghan News four girls bathing in a river drowned in Sawkai district. The victims included three sisters and one cousin.

Separately, eight people including a girldrowned as they tried to pull out firewood from the river, said Syedkehl added.

The individuals could not control themselves and were swept away by the overflowing river in the northern part of the province. Bodies of eight victims have been recovered so far.
