KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Public Healthinfo-icon (MoPH) on Tuesday said the mother and child mortality rates would drop with the addition of new sections to Istiqlal Hospital in the capital Kabul.

The new sections includeda baby care centre, medical equipment repair centre and CT scan training programme, the deputy minister of public health said.

Dr. Ahmad Jan Naeemhoped creation of the baby care centre would significantly reduce the mortality rate. Nearly 40 percent of children lost their lives in the first month after their birth, he said.

Naeem called the CT scan a new technology in Afghanistaninfo-icon, but said there were not enough professionals in the country to operate the facility.

However, he said the MoPH had launched a CT scan training programme for the capacity building of professionals.

He said that the equipment repair centre was also important because such apparatus could not be used whenever they were slightly damaged or their parts stopped working in the past.

An emergency section, laparoscopy surgery, aburnunit and construction of a waiting room were previously added to the hospital.
