KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Australian government on Thursday announced posting career diplomat Richard Feakes to Afghanistaninfo-icon as its new ambassador.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop announced the appointment of Feakes and thanked the outgoing ambassador, Matthew Anderson, for his work.

Feakes has previously served as deputy head of mission in Baghdad besides working in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.

Anderson was sent as Australian ambassador to Afghanistan in January 2015. Australia has provided more than $1 billion in development assistance to the war-hit country since 2001.

Australian defence force personnel continue to be part of the NATOinfo-icon mission to train, advise and assist the Afghan National Security Forces.
