Af-Pak technical group set to meet on border management

Jul 23, 2016 - 12:52

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): A joint Afghan-Pakistani technical working group will hold its maiden session next week on border management and related security issues, a newspaper reported on Saturday.

Last month, Adviser to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz and Foreign Minister agreed to set up the mechanism during a meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tashkent.

According to The Express Tribune, the meeting is scheduled for July 26 in Kabulinfo-icon.Apart from foreign ministers, national security advisors from the two sides will also meet as part of the tension-defusing arrangement.

“The expert-level meeting to be led by Pakistaninfo-icon’s director-general of military operations and his Afghan counterpart will formulate terms of references(ToRs) for the consultation mechanism on border management.”

Islamabad is said to be confident of the mechanism preventing a recurrence of border clashes between Pakistan and Afghanistaninfo-icon. The maiden meeting would take place once the ToRs were finalised, officials said.
