Turkish generals serving in Afghanistan held over coup

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Two Turkish generals serving in Afghanistaninfo-icon have been detained in Dubai on suspicion of having links to the July 15 coup against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

A Turkish news agency quoted an unnamed official as saying Maj. Gen. Mehmet Cahit Bakir, commander of Turkey's task force in Afghanistan, and Brig. Gen. Sener Topuc were arrested at the Dubai airport.

The state-controlled news agency, Anadolu reported the detentions followed cooperation between the Turkish National Intelligence Organisation (MIT) and the UAE authorities.

According to authorities, these are the first arrests of senior military serving outside the country as part of the investigation into the coup, blamed on the US-based preacher Fethullah Gulen.

Separately, former Istanbul governor Huseyin Avni Mutlu was also detained as part of an ongoing crackdown on supporters of the failed coup.More than 13,000 people, including over 100 generals, have been detained so far.
