Cabinet holds in-depth discussion on electoral reform

Aug 20, 2016 - 18:49

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The cabinet on Saturday held deep discussion over the reformation of election law and decided to review the law again and present the reformed version in the next cabinet meeting, a statement from the Presidential Palace said.

The meeting was chaired by President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani before noon in the palace where second Vice President Mohammad Sarwar Danish and head of the election law scrutiny and evaluation committee present the reformation strategy to the president. According to the statement the reform version of the election law was comprised of 16 chapters and 109 articles that evolved the conduct of free, fair, direct, secret and general elections on different level in the country.

The law also defined the duties and responsibilities of election commissions’ members for the free and transparent election in the country.

The Presidential Palace had previously said that the third legislative decree would be implemented without being referred to the parliament on the basis of legal advice from the Independent Commission for Overseeing the Implementation of Constitution (ICOIC).

Based on the decree, the selection committee would introduce new members of election commissions to the Presidential Palace for appointment. The Palace legislative committee last week decided to finalise the amended draft election law and refer it to the cabinet for approval.

Murtazawi said Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Abdullah Abdullah would also participate in the cabinet meeting. After the meeting, both the president and CEO would set a date for their next sitting to resolve their differences, he added.
